Artwork on Display at 5th St. Roundabout - WSET

Artwork on Display at 5th St. Roundabout - WSET

Reporter: Dele Rockson

Lynchburg, VA - The roundabout on Fifth St. in Lynchburg is no longer empty. A wooden sculpture project went on display Tuesday.

The artwork is part of T.C. Miller Elementary School's Soaring Eagles Academy. The program's goal is to get the kids involved in the city and work on their art and reading skills.

Project leaders chose Fifth Street because it's part of the arts district. They're hoping to start a public art trend in Lynchburg.

"A lot of cities around the country have done it. I remember in Chicago they used to have bulls all over the city. And then in a lot of other cities, they've done. They just um have place for artwork you know just to let the city know that this is an art community," said Eddie Claiborne, president of 5th St. Community Development Corporation.

The sculpture is a temporary project that will be taken down sometime in November. It's one of thirteen that will be installed around Lynchburg this year.

The artwork was selected in a juried competition organized by VSA, an affiliate of the Kennedy Center that was formerly known as Very Special Arts.

Students were asked to create artwork on the topic "What Inspires Me."

More than 3,000 students submitted artwork for consideration. Two students from each state and the District of Columbia were selected.
