The 'Sistine Chapel of rock art' uncovered by Australian achaeologists - couriermail.com.au
ARCHAEOLOGISTS have uncovered some of the earliest evidence of human painting in the world, making it Australia's oldest rock art.
University of Southern Queensland's Bryce Barker and Lara Lamb have had a charcoal-drawn fragment from a remote NT shelter dated at 28,000 years after excavating a small part of a massive rock shelter site named Narwala Gabarnmang.
Researchers have found that human occupation of the site dates back to 45,000 years ago, making it one of the earliest human occupation sites in the country.
Professor Barker said the site in Jawoyn country also revealed the earliest human use of edge ground axes at 35,000 years ago - a stone tool technology not developed elsewhere in the world until much later.
The Jawoyn Association of Katherine had asked for the work to be done for what it could tell about their culture.
Researchers consider the site one of the most extensive rock art sites in the world.
It has been described as the Sistine Chapel of rock art sites due to extensive art on the roof of the shelter.
"Rock art is notoriously difficult to date and although we know that people had occupied this site at least 45,000 years ago we did not know how old the art was," Professor Barker said.
Last year material excavated from the site included a fragment of charcoal drawing from a layer deep down in the earliest levels of occupation.
This meant the work could be accurately dated.
A specialist dating team led by Dr Fiona Petchey from the University of Waikato radiocarbon laboratory took scrapings of the charcoal which confirmed its age as among some of the earliest evidence of human painting in the world.
"When I turned over that little piece of rock and saw that art I couldn't believe it," Professor Barker said.
"There I was sitting in the lab at USQ in Toowoomba with a piece of art that I knew had to be more than 20,000 years old."

Furniture firm wins $1.6m order for African resort - New Zealand Herald
A New Zealand outdoor furniture company says it has beaten 19 international manufacturers to secure a $1 million-plus deal to supply a five-star resort being built in Cape Verde, an island nation off the west coast of Africa.
Adam Kay, who founded Iola in Auckland five years ago, said the company was invited to tender in January.
"I thought, 'Pie in the sky - it's going to very difficult [to win]'," Kay said. "We found out a couple weeks back that we'd won."
He said the order, worth more than €1 million ($1.6 million), would fill 50 shipping containers when it was sent to Cape Verde at the end of the year.
The 6000 pieces of rattan furniture will furnish the Melia Dunas Beach resort, which is under construction on the Cape Verde island of Sal, where tourists enjoy its white sand beaches and turquoise waters.
"I'm not aware of any deal that's bigger in our [rattan furniture] industry ... certainly in Australasia," Kay said.
Kay said Iola's furniture was manufactured by "master weavers" in the Philippines.
Like most manufacturers, Iola used synthetic rattan as natural resources of the plant had been severely depleted, he said, adding that natural rattan tended to rot if it was left outside.
Kay said it was not feasible to make the furniture in New Zealand as skilled weavers were not available.
"The main guys that we employ are from the island of Cebu, which is where the industry was born," he said. "The skill they've got is a pretty rare commodity."
Kay said one of Iola's furniture pieces, known as the "sail bed", took 30 days to weave.
"You could imagine if we were trying to do that [work] in a Western country it would be cost prohibitive - you just couldn't do it."
Kay said that Iola had suppliedfurniture to other resorts in Fijiand New Caledonia.
"We get a lot of business because our furniture is designed for the New Zealand market, which is high UV and high rainfall."
Kay said the company would soon be shipping smaller furniture orders to Sri Lanka and Barbados.

Rodney King Found Dead In California Home - MTV
Rodney King, who will always be remembered as the man who set off a chain of events leading to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, was found dead in his California home on Sunday at the age of 47. Although King's own foray into music was short-lived, his unfortunate experience resonated across the country and clearly affected the content of legendary hip-hop albums like Ice Cube's The Predator.
King was brutally beaten during a 1991 traffic stop in Los Angeles, during which he was struck more than 50 times by four white officers, who were later accused of using racial slurs during the attack. Footage of the incident eventually made its way to TV, sparking public outcry. The controversial outcome of the trial led to a series of deadly riots and looting in the city that claimed 50 lives and cost approximately $1 billion in damages.
According to CNN, King was found dead on Sunday morning, after his fiancée Cynthia Kelly placed a 911 call to the Rialto, California, police at approximately 5:25 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene, King's body was at the bottom of a pool; he was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.
Captain Randy DeAnda told reporters that police would investigate the crime as a drowning, and added that there were no obvious signs of foul play at the scene or suspicious injuries to the victim's body. "His fiancée heard him in the rear yard," DeAnda said describing the events before Kelly placed the 911 call. (Kelly met King while serving as a juror in his 1994 lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles.)
Even after the L.A. riots had ended, King's beating continued to send shockwaves across the nation, thanks to the clear picture of the racially motivated police brutality that captured in the taped footage. In 1993, the accused officers stood trial, this time in federal court, and two were sentenced to 30 months in prison, while two other were acquitted. King, who brought his own lawsuit against the city, received $3.8 million in damages.
Strangely enough, in 2011 was King was ticketed for a minor traffic violation on the 20th anniversary of the beating. Besides that, the Californian also attempted to pursue a career in music, using some of his settlement money to launch it. Four years ago, King appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab," where he was open about his battle with alcohol.
The impact of King's beating on the state of race in America can be heard across classic hip-hop albums like Ice Cube's The Predator and Dr. Dre's The Chronic, which captured the racial tension in Los Angeles at the time. On his single, "Who Got the Camera?" Cude made direct reference to the beating, by telling a realistic story of being assaulted by the police after being pulled over.
