Penzance artwork made of salt

Falmouth School students wowed the crowds in Penzance recently, when they unveiled an artwork made mostly out of salt.

The “Salt Banquet” installation was created by a small group of students from years eight and nine, who were invited to exhibit at the Exchange Gallery in Penzance as part of the “Extraction Project” alongside other local schools such as Helston Community College and Mounts Bay Academy.

Rowena Tarplee, art teacher at Falmouth School, said: “The group have spent the last three months exploring the science, mythology and importance of salt and its extraction from seawater in Cornwall past and present.

“Working with artist Sally Noall they investigated salt crystals produced by different types of salts, Victorian salt clay and modelling and casting techniques.

“As a group they found a common curiosity in the folklore and social history surrounding salt, and its uses and values.”

The students chose to demonstrate their research by making the Salt Banquet, which is designed to reinvigorate this everyday foodstuff with some of the mystery and myth of the past.

Mrs Tarplee said: “A huge congratulations to Antonio Parker-Rees, Amber Harper, Rachel Elvans, Kyanna Cleave, Nathalie Lloyd-Cope, Lilla Westley, Katy Wheeler and Josh Crook for all their hard-work and creativity in producing such a dynamic and truly professional installation at a world class art venue.

“Also a special thanks to Falmouth based artist Sally Noall for being so devoted to the project and such an inspirational mentor to some of Falmouth School's budding artists.”

The exhibition ran from June 1 to 16.
