Welcome to my big fat gypsy mansion: Through the gaudy keyhole into the opulent secretive world of the Roma - Daily Mail

These stunning pictures show what home life is really like for the richest members of the Roma Gypsy community.

Carlo Gianferro has lifted the lid on the notoriously secretive race to reveal their living conditions are a far cry from the cramped caravans of Channel 4's Big Fat Gypsy Weddings.

His series of 'Gypsy Interiors' portraits show how the often outwardly loud and vivacious people have equally gaudy coloured living rooms and kitchens in their mini-palaces in Romania and Moldova.

It's laughable how high most of those pictures are hung! As a general rule, pictures should be hung such that the middle of the picture is at eye level.

Dude, so much busy it makes me dizzy.

I think I have a headache :(

My eyes hurt....

Where do they park the horse??

Startling comments you guys! Seriously? They aren't like us and they don't have the same taste as us, so we'll just laugh at them and make derogatory remarks about something we don't understand... Isn't that what bullies do? And Benny of Ipswich, shame your family didn't send YOU to a school of manners, because you sure could use a few. Do you all really want to live in a homogenized world where everyone buys the same stuff, lives in the same kinds of house, eats the same food, has the same customs, etc etc etc? I mean, if everyone has to be the same what are you all going to do when you want to take your 'right-on' cultural vacations so you can seem more interesting to your friends around the dinner table? Live and let live, for pity's sake.

The 'valuable' painting is a print of the Venus of Urbino by Titian. So unless this one was pinched from the Uffizi, I would say that you could buy the copy almost anywhere for a few dollars.

I love the swirling, wooden floor. It's beautiful.

Although some of these homes were a little "tacky" for me, I found these photos incredibly fascinating. I absolutely love the pictures. How they make their money and how they live, means nothing to me. I just want to thank the photographer for sharing these amazing pictures with us.

Extraordinary that so many people should posses such bad taste, where do they get these interior ideas from. That towering fireplace is terrifying, looks like something bodies would be put in!! Eek

Vintage and handmade goods store to open in the East Village - Des Moines Register

Tuesday is opening day for Silo, a vintage and handmade goods shop at 509 E. Fifth St. in the East Village. Owners are Kasey and Jordana Henke of Earlham.

The store will carry vintage and antique furniture, home accessories and jewelry. The 123-year-old former livery stable and auto repair shop where the couple set up their business is a perfect fit for a vintage store, they said. It has cement floors, painted white brick walls, beamed and tin ceilings, much of which is original.

The couple has been selling vintage and antique items from their home-based business called Rescued Junk by Old Crow Farm in Earlham for a couple of years. Jordana said her dream was to find a spot in Des Moines’ East Village to set up a store. She is originally from Des Moines and Kasey from Earlham.

Kasey is a chef by trade and Jordan, full-time mom to two young children. The couple collects vintage and antique items that they find at auctions, flea markets and from individuals that contacted them.

“We collect things from anywhere we can,” Jordana said.

The explosion of vintage shops in recent months is a sign of the times, Jordana believes.

“Our generation is all about recycling and valuing what is old,” she said. Silo will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Its Facebook page is at www.facebook.com/SiloVintage, or call 770-3479.

Genetically modified foods may get label in California - FOX News

California voters will soon decide whether to require special labels for food made from genetically modified ingredients, in a closely watched test of consumer attitudes about the merits of genetically engineered crops.

Advocates collected more than half a million signatures supporting the stronger labeling requirements, and the secretary of state this week certified the measure for the state's November ballot.

If it passes, California would be the first state to require labeling of such a wide range of foods containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.

The proposal would require most processed foods by 2014 to bear a label telling shoppers that they contain ingredients derived from plants whose DNA was altered with genes from other plants, animals, viruses or bacteria.

Many backers of similar legislation in more than a dozen states say the intent is to give consumers more information about what they're eating, and foster transparency and trust in the food system. Major agricultural groups and the processed food industry oppose stricter labeling, saying it risks sowing fear and confusion among shoppers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says genetically modified foods pose no greater health risks than traditional foods. Opponents of labeling rules say they could prompt hikes in packaging costs.

If the measure passes, most raw or processed food made from plants or animals with engineered genetic material would need to be labeled, although certified organic foods and alcohol would be exempted. Meat and dairy products also would not require a label if the animals are fed with genetically engineered grains, which the initiative's opponents say amounts to a loophole.

"Consumers have a fundamental right to know what is in their food and make choices, so I think everyone should be working toward this," said Albert Straus, president of the Straus Family Creamery, a popular organic dairy in Petaluma. "Our labeling costs do not go through to the consumer."

Straus avoids using genetically modified feed for his herd. His creamery became the first in the country to be voluntarily certified as GMO-free in 2010.

Organic farmers say they stand to benefit from more informed consumers who may reject genetically modified products and instead choose organic food.

The Food and Drug Administration is considering a petition to label genetically engineered foods nationwide.

The Organic Consumers Association has said labeling GMO ingredients in the U.S. also would make domestic markets more competitive with markets in the European Union, which imposes guidelines on informing consumers about genetically modified food.

Labeling opponents in California, however, say the measure could spark frivolous lawsuits brought by citizens who believe a product is mislabeled, even if they don't claim to have been harmed.

"This could become a lawsuit magnet well beyond the borders of California," said Tom Scott, executive director of the Sacramento-based California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse. "You're just going to see trial lawyers walking up and down grocery store aisles saying this doesn't meet the labeling requirements."

The change could also place a new financial burden on farms, said Jamie Johansson, an Oroville farmer who is second vice president of the California Farm Bureau Federation.

"Then, of course, there are the legal concerns about verifying that you are GMO-free," he said.

California Secretary of State Debra Bowen also certified seven additional initiatives for November, including a proposal to modify California's strict three-strikes sentencing law by making a life sentence on a third strike possible only when the new conviction is serious or violent.

Prized Antique Scottish Stained Glass Art Collection Sale & Auction to Benefit Project C.U.R.E. - YAHOO!

“Buy a Window, Save a Life” Fundraiser Will Deliver Supplies to Pediatric Clinic in Belize

Centennial, CO (PRWEB) June 13, 2012

The prized, personal collection of antique stained glass windows owned by Scottish Stained Glass president Martin Faith, will be released to the public and made available for purchase in a fundraising effort for Project C.U.R.E. on June 21, 2012.

The “Buy a Window, Save a Life” cocktail event will take place on the evening of the Summer Solstice at the Scottish Stained Glass showroom in Centennial, Colorado. From 5:30 pm to sunset, these one of a kind, masterpiece windows will be on display with experts explaining their design and construction. Sparkling in the sun of the longest day of the year, the windows will be sold, with a select grouping available via a live silent auction, to raise the funds needed to help Project C.U.R.E. ship containers holding approximately $1,000,000 of medical supplies to the new pediatric intensive care unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City.

“I had the privilege of meeting Project C.U.R.E.’s president, Dr. Doug Jackson, several years ago and have wondered repeatedly ever since what we could do to become a part of the mission of this highly respected organization,” said Martin Faith, founder of Scottish Stained Glass and Scottish Home Improvements. “Despite their tremendous personal value to our family, we realize that selling and auctioning the collection of antique stained glass we brought with us from Scotland over 20 years ago could potentially save hundreds, if not thousands of lives, and we are honored to make them available for the public to see and buy to help this incredible cause.”

Each of the 150 leaded glass windows that will be available at the event were hand made between 1870 and 1914. Every window is in exceptional condition and requested donation prices begin at $400 and range up to $20,000.
