The Office star donated the canvas which depicts the New York skyline backed by a flame red sky.
Gervais was among a number of artists who handed over works in a bid to raise money for Maggie's Caring Cancer Centres, but the funnyman's piece failed to attract a single bid when it went under the hammer on Saturday.
Jane Owen, owner of the Inchmore Gallery in Inverness where the sale was held, writes in a post on the event's Facebook page: "Well 5pm has been and gone and unfortunately the Ricky Gervais painting didn't sell, however, hopefully it will go off to another auction, elsewhere, and raise oodles of cash!"

Metro readers capture their city's spirit using mobile art apps - Metro.co.uk
Six weeks ago, Metro teamed up with Talenthouse and invited readers to create and submit artwork on their mobile devices inspired by city living.
Enticed by a £1,000 top prize and the chance to see their artwork published in Metro’s print and tablet editions, readers sent an exciting range of creative entries from all over the world via the Metro Facebook page.
The brief was for readers to take inspiration from their city to create an image on a tablet or smartphone using an art-based programme or app.
Sophie Robinson, Metro’s creative director, pioneered the campaign. She says: ‘At Metro, we love to celebrate creativity and we also love our tablet app, so combining the two has been really exciting for us.
‘The tablet is such a new medium for art and we were stunned by some of the amazing entries.’
Readers voted for their favourites, featured right, and Metro chose Alison Moody from Surrey as the overall winner for her picture, Vibrant London, inspired by the colours and mixed emotions she feels while walking along the Thames and through busy markets in the evening.
Moody, who’s studying art at the University for the Creative Arts Farnham, aimed to portray London’s colour, creativity and unique vibe.
Robinson says: ‘Our winning artist used London in her work but we feel the colour and vibrancy of her submission illustrates the excitement of living in any city.'
See today’s Metro tablet edition for the five favourite entries in full and be inspired to get creative on your mobile device.
