Noted for bright colors and beautiful patterns, Amish quilts have charmed people for over a century. Of the three most famous designs--Sunshine and Shadows, Diamond in Square and Bars--Sunshine and Shadows is the most beloved. Featuring brightly-colored diamond patches interspersed with dark-colored patches, the bold pattern draws the viewer’s eyes from the center outward around the light and dark arrangement. While the Sunshine and Shadow design is over a century old, the amazing quilt gardens inspired by the classic quilt designs are a recent addition to Northern Indiana. This summer Weaver Furniture Sales, a large Shipshewana furniture store, will display the Sunshine and Shadow design in their Quilt Garden. Owner Ida Weaver stated, "We are excited to show clients a different way of seeing the Sunshine and Shadow quilt".LaGrange and Elkhart County in Northern Indiana is home to a large selection of quilt gardens. The Quilt Garden Tour along the Heritage Trail boasts 19 gardens with over 100,000 blooms throughout seven small communities in Northern Indiana's Amish Country. Typically, each quilt garden is created by members of the community and designs are inspired by personal history and preference. Quilt gardens also have viewing decks and informational plaques giving details of the specific design and types of flowers. The Quilt Garden Tour draws thousands of visitors each summer to Northern Indiana’s Amish Country.
Today, the Amish continue to live in LaGrange and Elkhart County Indiana as they have since the 1850’s. Many maintain farmsteads, wood crafting shops, bakeries and delis. Shipshewana, located in LaGrange County, features a downtown theater and a huge flea market that draws thousands of annual visitors each year.
