Looking for Vintage Decor? Check out this once a month store! - Examiner
Last month, at about this time of the month I stumbled across an article in an antique register that was talking about this super unique vintage antique store - Sweet Salvage. What makes it unique? It is only open for four days a month. Yes, you read that right, only four days a month! They spend the rest of the month setting up for their once a month opening. What's to set up? That is the other unique part of the store, each month the store is set up in themed vignettes.
So I visited last month and I have to say I wasn't very impressed. It was small, hot and super busy. There was no parking, no room and I made the mistake of taking my super sweet, super well-behaved 2 1/2 year old. Strollers and just potty trained toddlers were not the best choice to bring to this store. But I will admit I was intrigued and wish that I had had more time to actually explore the store and absorb the really innovative setups. And I wanted to see what the store looked like on day one of the sale, not day three. Bonus - they were moving the very next month to a bigger location, with air and bathrooms!
Turn time forward to last weekend. My mother-in-law and I played hooky and got to the shop about 15 minutes before the doors opened. I knew there would be a line, but this? There was no parking for a good 1/2 mile around the store and the line was along the side of the building and into the parking lot. Thank goodness the staff thought about us poor shoppers standing in the sun, because they provided ice cold water bottles - for free!! The store does an amazing job at establishing a pre-want for the selections for the month by showcasing sneak peeks on their Facebook page and they have a contest to win early admission to the store to buy before the crowds.
We got into the store fairly quickly, and while it has about 2500 more square feet of space, there is about 2500 more square feet of items. The store was still crammed with furniture, decor and people. Lots and lots of people. It was disappointing that a lot of items had already been purchased (not sure how, unless the early admittance people bought a ton of stuff). And there were arguments about who saw what first, but it was fairly civilized. This month’s theme was "Destinations" and the vignettes all showcased a country - like France or a place - like the beach.
What I loved about the store - the stories that were told by the individual displays (which are set up by individual vendors not the store itself). The little things that make up the feel of the era, like the books written in the language and time period of the display, or the fabrics and signs that bring to mind a particular place and time.
What I didn't love about the store - it is still super crowded, especially when you add a ton of people to the displays, that items are not always clearly priced and finding the vendor responsible for a certain area is sometimes hard and the super slow, by hand method of calculating how much you owe for the pretty trinkets that you picked up. We spent over an hour in a Disneyesque line trying to pay for a small handful of items. Last pet peeve, because of the small amount of onsite parking, if you buy something big, be prepared to haul it, yourself to your car.
Want to check it out for yourself? Sweet Salvage is located at 4648 N 7th Avenue in Phoenix, AZ. The next showcase is June 21-24. Hours of operation are 10:00am-8:00pm on Thursday and 10:00am-6:00pm Friday through Sunday. The line starts forming about an hour or so before hand. And the displays are refilled with new merchandise each night so the displays can be slightly different each day of the sale. They accept all major credit cards and you can arrange to pick up your merchandise for a later date.
I think that I'm going to wait a bit to go back - the Halloween and Christmas displays from last year are making me feel like that will be the time to go back and see what this great group of vendors can cook up.
Have you been to Sweet Salvage? What did you think? Any favorite finds that you'd love to show off?
