A S thousands of students across Notts hide away in bedrooms to revise for GCSEs, A levels and degrees, fitted bedroom furniture specialist Betta Living (www.bettaliving.co.uk) has published new research which shows that providing the right kind of learning environment is just as essential to success as a good diet and solid revision timetable.
Betta Living designer, Jamie Dean, says: "More than 90 per cent of students revise in their bedrooms.
"Our research shows simple ways you can update rooms to help students perform better during stressful exam times and create conditions conducive for study and relaxation."
Betta Living's top tips for creating 'Brain Boosting Bedrooms' include:
1. Choose green and blue in the bedroom.
According to psychotherapist and author Angela Wright, gentle shades of green and blue help concentration, memory and emotional tranquillity. She says: "Blue is the colour of the mind and is essentially soothing. Strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter, soft blues will calm the mind and aid concentration. Consequently it is serene and mentally calming."
Expert author Martin Mak adds: "Green is said to counteract headaches, disturbances of vision and loss of concentration and gentle shades of blue and green are therefore thought to relieve stress and improve concentration levels."
2. De-clutter and opt for minimalist furniture.
Feng Shui experts believe clutter creates low, stagnant and confusing energy that constantly drains energy from you.
The basic principals of Feng Shui say that we are influenced by things, events and people closest to us. So clear the clutter in your bedroom to give the mind space to take in the essential information needed for cramming. Take out all the items that create visual clutter and do not really belong in the bedroom. This includes the TV, phone, any exercise equipment, bulky furniture and storage units.
3. Use black-out blinds. Essential to aid sleep.
Teens need at least eight-and-a-half hours of uninterrupted sleep to leave their bodies and minds rejuvenated for the next day, say the Sleep Foundation. If sleep is cut short, the body doesn't have time to complete all of the phases needed for muscle repair, memory consolidation and release of hormones regulating growth and appetite. Then we wake up less prepared to concentrate, make decisions, or engage fully in school and social activities.
4. Ensure rooms are bright during study time. Mirrored furniture is great for reflecting light for maximum illumination.
Sunlight lifts the mood and improves energy levels, helping you to feel more focused and motivated. Light directly influences our emotions because it reaches the brain through the eyes, and is transmitted to the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is connected to almost every other part of the brain, and is involved with the regulation of hormones involved in motivation and reward. As a consequence, light has an effect on our basic drives and biological functions.
5. Open windows and have a stream of fresh air coming in to the room.
A steady supply of fresh air is very important. Fresh air provides you with a steady supply of oxygen which is needed by your brain and every single cell of your body. If you stay in a closed in area for a long period of time, you will end up breathing in the same air and the oxygen content will go down continually as you breathe out carbon dioxide. Breathing this stale air will not supply your body with enough oxygen to keep your cells fuelled and functioning properly.

Gloucester Road Tube station art inspired by Big Ben - london24.com

Dramatic and colourful artwork inspired by Big Ben has been unveiled at Gloucester Road Tube station in west London.
The installation by artist Sarah Morris has been created for the 18 arches that span the length of the disused platform at the station, and is the latest commission for the Art on the Underground programme.
As Tube trains enter the station passengers see a spectrum of colour as they travel past the arches.
The aim is to recall the countdown to a spectacle or event, and the artwork “also parallels the way in which a train pulls in and out of the station”.
The work derives from a painting of Big Ben that Morris created as one of the 12 posters for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The artist said: “This is the first series of images where I’ve treated London as a subject, as a starting point.
“Stripped bare, Big Ben [2012] is a streamlined image of time, and ironically anti-authoritarian - no-one can control the politics of the future. I wanted to create a spectrum of colour that parallels the movement in and out of Gloucester Road station, an image of arrival and departure.”
Louise Coysh, curator for Art on the Underground, said, “We’re delighted to commission Sarah Morris as the 12th internationally acclaimed artist at our flagship site.
“Her work resonates very strongly not only with London’s architecture and transport infrastructure, but most especially with the energy and excitement in the capital during 2012.”
The Gloucester Road commissions provide invited artists with the opportunity to create ambitious, temporary new work in response to Art on the Underground’s flagship site and its context, which has more than one million visitors each month.

TVXQ, Super Junior, B2ST, 2PM, & more to be featured in ’2012 K-pop Star Entertain Art Show’ - allkpop
Artwork featuring popular K-pop stars will soon become available for the public to see!
Starting June 23rd until August 19th, the Engagement Company, headed by Park Jae Shin, will hold its first art exhibit, titled ’2012 K-pop Star Entertain Art Show’, in the Korean International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) located in Ilsan. The art show will aim to attract both domestic and foreign Hallyu fans with its K-pop inspired paintings.
The artists have attempted to paint realistic, photo-like images of the K-pop stars using the “trompe-l’oeil technique”, a French technique that involves creating an optical illusion so that 2D images appear to be 3D ones. The application of such techniques can be seen in both the 2PM and Son Dam Bi examples provided. The K-pop artists depicted seem to be coming out of the pictures rather than remaining confined within the frames.
There will be three different sections within the art show, including a star zone, a themed zone, and a special zone. The star zone will feature the portraits of 19 artists, including TVXQ, Super Junior, Wonder Girls, f(x), KARA, CNBLUE, B2ST, Baek Ji Young, Im Jae bum, Yoon Do Hyun, Kim Jang Hoon, Huh Gak, and more across a total of 110 pieces. The Engagement Company has made sure to gain permission via signed contracts from the entertainment labels to use each celebrity’s image for the art show.
The special zone will feature pop artists like Mary Kim, Charles Jang, Artnom, and The Jack, who will be presenting K-pop star related pop art projects through this special showcase.
Representatives of the art show commented, “We will provide a special kind of entertainment bordering between reality and illusion for the Korean fans as well as international fans of Hallyu.”
Tickets to the show can be booked in advance at the Interpark website.
Will any of you be in Korea this summer to enjoy a water fight with 2PM and interact with your favorite stars? Or at least, painted versions of them?

Artwork to take park position 50 years after original went missing - This is Sentinel
By Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
A sculpture will be unveiled in Burslem Park next week over 50 years after its predecessor went missing from the same spot.
The newly erected Mayfly sculpture replaces a statue of a water nymph, donated to the park in 1894 by Sir Donald Doulton, which went missing through an act of vandalism in the early 1960s.
The work has seen the city council, Burslem Park Partnership and students from Haywood Engineering College, Moorland Park Primary School, Jackfield Infant School, team up with trainees from PM Training and artists Phil Hardaker and Andrew Edwards.
The unveiling takes place just under a week before Burslem Park will be officially reopened following a two year multimillion pound restoration project.
The sculpture development project and park restoration was supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund.
During the first phase of the park's restoration project, local arts company Artwaves were commissioned to work with local artists and local communities to produce an artistic proposal for a new design. The steel sculpture and has been created at the Atlas Works in the City Centre.
Artist Phil Hardaker also worked with children from Jackfield Infants School, Moorpark Junior School and Haywood Engineering College during early 2012 to produce ceramic jewelling for the Mayfly's wings and tiles to top the original terracotta plinth. The children's tiles will also provide edging for the new path that will enable access to the sculpture.
Councillor Andy Platt, cabinet member for city services and green enterprises, said: "The statue will take pride of place in this wonderful park. To replace the original statue with no photographic reference point has not been an easy task and I'd like to thank everybody involved that has helped to bring this fine piece to life."
Artist Phil Hardaker, added: "It has been a delight to work with Andrew Edwards, the local community and schools on the completion of the mayfly sculpture for Burslem Park.
"The work embraces listening to the community and local children to create a truly unique and stunning new edition to the restored park."
The statue is not a replica of the original as, despite the best efforts of the park's volunteer group the Burslem Park Partnership, it was not possible to find a detailed photograph that would have enabled a replica to be created.

Old nappies turned into furniture under new recycling scheme - BBC News
Used nappies will be turned into garden furniture, roof tiles and railway sleepers under a new recycling scheme being trialled in Scotland.
Each year some 160 million nappies are sent to Scottish rubbish dumps.
But four councils are to trial a kerbside collection scheme for 36,000 homes across Fife, Stirling, Perth and Kinross and North Lanarkshire.
The pilot will run for an initial six months to establish whether it can be rolled out nationwide in the future.
As well as disposable nappies, incontinence products and other related items - like wet wipes, nappy sacks and cotton wool - will also be suitable for the recycling collection.
Jenny Sim of Zero Waste Scotland said babies used an average of 4.16 nappies per day, with more than 90% using disposables.
Reusable nappiesShe added: "The average child in Scotland goes through 4,000 nappies before they're potty trained, which is an awful lot going to landfill.
"The local authorities in the pilot areas will be collecting the waste, they'll send it to a big treatment unit where the waste is heated up to 125 degrees to sterilise it and clean it.
"The human waste is put to sewage, and the plastics and celluloids are then converted into useable products such as park benches, road signage, railway sleepers and decking.
"It does make it so much easier for parents in these trial areas to do their bit and help the environment and help recycling in Scotland."
Sheila Sangster, who has been a childminder in Stirling for 27 years, said it was "frightening" to think how many thousands of nappies she had sent to landfill over that period.
Mrs Sangster said she believed the recycling scheme could change the way people viewed the debate between disposable and reusable nappies.
'Step forward'"To use disposable nappies is so much more convenient for mums, so to have a scheme like this where they know that their nappies are not just going to lie in a landfill for hundreds of years - I think people will take up the opportunity to recycle them.
"You've got all these (recycling) boxes already, so one more is not going to make any difference.
"Also, it's going to be picked up weekly instead of lying in your bin for two weeks. As you can imagine, in the summertime that's not pleasant."
Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said: "Disposable nappies, although convenient, do have a huge impact on the environment with a staggering 450,000 ending up in landfill each day in Scotland.
"This innovative new scheme is a fantastic step forward for recycling and makes it easier for parents to do their bit for the environment.
"It's great that new technologies allow us to recycle even more materials. In this way, we can reuse our waste and treat it as a valuable resource with the potential to boost our economy."

DC Entertainment Launches National Art Exhibition to Benefit We Can Be Heroes Giving Campaign - Yahoo Finance
BURBANK, Calif., June 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- DC Entertainment announced the official launch of the Darkness & Light: Art Inspired by Heroes & Villains, Hope & Heroism exhibition, a one-of-a-kind art and education tour to raise awareness and funds for the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. Darkness & Light features some of today's top contemporary artists and showcases a collection of original artwork inspired by the DC Comics' Justice League characters paired with real world photography that depicts the everyday heroes fighting hunger in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. From the Super Heroes that fight for justice in the comic world, to the human heroes who make a difference every day in the real world, Darkness & Light tells the story of the crisis through the lens of those working tirelessly to help the people of the Horn of Africa fight the hunger crisis.
The centerpiece of the collection features a large-scale piece of original artwork by Jim Lee, the legendary artist and DC Entertainment co-publisher, featuring the profile of Batman in a color palette inspired by the hues of Africa – yellow, green, red and black. Lee's work is featured alongside journalistic photography that expose moments of heroism by aid workers in the Horn of Africa. Along with the exclusively commissioned piece from Lee, the art exhibition includes additional original art inspired by the universe of DC Comics and its iconic characters, including world-class Super Heroes Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg, as well as a few famous villains including Catwoman and The Joker. Re-imagined by exceptional contemporary artists from around the world, the artwork will be on display at tour stops nationwide. Select pieces of DC Entertainment artwork will be auctioned off at the end of the tour with all net proceeds going directly to the We Can Be Heroes campaign.
Darkness & Light is a signature initiative of We Can Be Heroes, a giving campaign designed to raise awareness and funds for the worst hunger crisis in 60 years that is taking place in the Horn of Africa where more than 8 million people are in need of immediate assistance. The unique pairing of comic-inspired art with photography from the Horn of Africa shows visitors what is possible when we tap into our own super hero qualities of responsibility, willpower and inner strength to be of service to people in need.
The comic-inspired artwork was curated for the tour to showcase the artists' expressions of the mission of the We Can Be Heroes campaign through their own lens, and to highlight the hope that the Justice League characters embody. Paired with stunning photography that depicts heroic moments in the Horn of Africa - from a mother feeding her malnourished daughter porridge for the first meal she has had in days, to a father carrying his child across miles of dry terrain to a refugee camp, to an aid worker offering solace to a little boy who has been separated from his family, the Darkness & Light exhibition reflects the super hero powers we each hold that compel us to do good in the world.
The exhibition is heading to Portland, OR where it will be on display at the global headquarters of Mercy Corps, one of the nonprofit partners in the We Can Be Heroes campaign. Some tour stops will include intimate salon events so attendees can learn more about the complexities of the ongoing hunger crisis and what they can do to make an impact. Upcoming stops for the exhibition include:
- Portland: June 25-30 at Mercy Corps Global Headquarters
- San Diego and San Diego Comic-Con: July 9-15 at Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts
- Atlanta: August 4-13 at the Phipps Plaza
- Chicago: September 20-26, location TBD
