City Furniture opens green store - WSVN-TV
PINECREST, Fla. (WSVN) -- The green scene now can be found at a well-known South Florida furniture store.
We aren't talking about the big color for this season but an environmental reason. For the average customer, this renovated location of City Furniture, off US 1, near Dadeland, might look like your average furniture store, but it's anything but. The company went out of its way to install the latest and greatest green products from the ground up. "It's a green building, and it's fabulous," said Keith Koenig, City Furniture's President.
The building underwent a $3.5 million extreme green makeover. Some of the green features include: "Our track lighting here is all LED," said Koenig, "and the Light Emitting Diode technology saves about two-thirds on the electricity, and it saves on the air conditioning, too."
All around, the near-30,000-square-foot showroom, you will find recycled material almost everywhere. From the wood floors and walls to the paint used, the materials used were a top priority. "Flooring, paint, all the materials are local, so it's sustainable in South Florida," said Koenig.
The company's green approach has not gone unrecognized. City Furniture Dadeland is now only the second lead furniture store in the country because of this renovation. The lead certification has only been granted to those buildings who go the extra mile to go eco-friendly. "Lead certification, green buildings are more sustainable on the long haul," said Koenig, "so there is a cost on the upfront, which many companies don't want to do. We see the pay off."
The building renovation adds a second floor to the building, and a 27-foot high central atrium. The new design is not only good for the environment but also eye-appealing for the customer.
City Furniture plans to open four more stores with this green platform in mind. The new store also gives a boost to the local economy, as it has produced 25 more jobs in the area.

Antique fire equipment to parade through Westminster, have show at Farm Museum Saturday - Evening Sun
Retired fire equipment from the 1920s through the '80s will be on display Saturday at the Chesapeake Antique Fire Apparatus Association's 43rd Annual Spring Muster at the Carroll County Farm Museum.
"It's similar to an antique car show, but with fire apparatus," club president Frank Tremel said.
The Spring Muster starts off with a parade of the antique fire equipment, complete with sirens and horns a-blaring, traveling down Main Street in Westminster to the Farm Museum at 10 a.m.
Equipment will be parked around the Farm Museum Pond off Gist Road so that the pumping equipment can access the pond water for pumping demonstrations, said Charlie Cadle, a member of the CAFAA board of the directors.
Most of the equipment on display will be from the '50s, '60s and '70s, Cadle said, but members also have pieces that go back to the 1800s, though those aren't the motorized vehicles. Attendees can expect to see antique hook and ladder trucks, pump trucks and specialty equipment, such as brush trucks, as well as a variety of hand-pulled carts with different uses.
"There's plenty of them out there," Cadle said of antique fire equipment.
Most fire companies replace their equipment after 20 years, he said, and many are in the practice of selling the used equipment to a fire company member or an outside collector. Most of the collectors are retired career or volunteer firemen, he said.
Tremel said the majority of the equipment taking part in the muster is privately
owned, but a few fire companies, including Westminster's, own historical fire equipment and will be bringing it to the show. Westminster usually brings its 1924 Lafrance ladder truck, he said, which is also on display in its firehouse museum the rest of the year.In addition to the fire equipment, there will be a flea market, different vendors and children's activities.
"A lot of kids like fire engines, as did I," Cadle said.
Many of adult men remember their fondness for fire trucks from when they were children, he said, and want to bring their own children out to the muster to share that experience with them.
"You're always a kid at heart," he said.
In addition to the muster being an opportunity for the CAFAA as an outreach event to the public, it's also an opportunity for its members to get together and see what each has been working on in the past year.
Many of these pieces come in some level of degradation, Cadle said, and the members work hard to restore them to how they would have looked in their era.
The event is free for all attendees, and non-club members are welcome to bring their equipment as well, he said, though there is a $15 registration fee to be part of the show.
"It's just a day to recognize the fire service by displaying the antique apparatus from years gone by," Tremel said.

Furniture & Decorative Art Auction Featuring 20th Century Design at the Bay Area's Michaan's Auctions - PRWeb
Alameda, CA (PRWEB) June 01, 2012
Three of the most prominent names in the world of modern furniture will be represented in Michaan’s 20th Century Modern, Fine Furniture & Decorations Auction. Lots are composed of modern and contemporary furniture of exceptional craftsmanship and design. One of the most outstanding pieces lies in a Finn Juhl Chieftains Chair designed in 1948 (lot 1248, $3,000-6,000). The Chieftain Chair is recognized by many as Finn Juhl’s most distinctive furniture creation. The Cheiftain’s structure is the result of years of design work that created a chair consisting of free form elements. This design was in stark contrast to the stodgy aesthetics of the time, reinvigorating the furniture market. Fewer than eighty Cheiftains were originally made, also helping the chair to gain a cult following and market exclusivity. Recent sales results of the Cheiftain Chair have seen an early production model sell for over $30,000 at auction.
Popularity and praise for the Cheiftain Chair also brought attention to its designer, Finn Juhl. The Danish architect, interior and industrial designer came to be most widely recognized for his furniture design, thanks in large part to the Cheiftain. As a result, Juhl became a leading figure in the creation of Danish design in the 1940s and introduced the movement of Danish Moderism to America as well. Part of Juhl’s mark on the industry was in establishing a distinct style of soft edges to modern wooden chairs. He also preferred organic shapes that pushed design creativity to new heights. Juhl was even influenced by tribal art, as he came to exhibit the Cheiftain chair with photos of anthropological weapons.
The married design team of American furniture artisans Charles Ormond Eames, Jr. and Bernice Alexandra “Ray” Eames was responsible for many classic, iconic furniture designs of the 20th century. Their outstanding careers in both design and architecture spawned a modern furniture line that drew praise from critics and buyers alike. Ray Eames prominence even lead him to design several covers for landmark industry magazine Arts & Architecture in 1943, 1944 and 1947. An Eames rosewood lounge chair and ottoman circa 1960 will be auctioned as lot 1212 with an estimate of $2,000-3,000. The rosewood version is considered quite collectible and rare as its manufacturer, Herman Miller, ceased to produce rosewood pieces some fourteen years ago.
John B. Salterini is widely responsible for wrought iron garden furniture being seen in a high-end light. In fact, this type of furniture can be used indoors or outdoors, often resembling popular Gothic Revival and Art Deco styles. Furniture of this sculptural design was used by fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent in his personal residence at la rue de Babylone as well. This wonderfully crafted furniture can be found in three lots of the auction at an estimate of $800-1,200 each. Lot 1243 features four chairs and three stools, while lots 1244 and 1245 consist of one bench each. Pieces similar to the furniture in these lots were pictured in an Architectural Digest Magazine issue from the winter of 1963 which featured the home of prominent Los Angeles interior designer Arthur Elrod.
All the mentioned furniture will be available in Michaan’s Auctions 20th Century Modern, Fine Furniture & Decorations Auction, held on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. The illustrated auction catalog will be on-line for review at http://www.michaans.com.
